I have found that if you are the kind of person that much into Aphex Twin, all you want to do is share it with someone else, possibly the unwilling, and cost is irrelevant in that regard.

Not judging them in so far as observing and predicting... had a few friends into that stuff and they always just wanted to share, like it was the most underrated thing in the world

This made me laugh. I don’t know anyone that into Aphex Twin, but I do know people into other bands to that level. I would add that, in my experience, their amount of dedication is roughly inversely proportional to how good the band actually is.

Yeah, i’m not trying to start a fight, but I can think of a few intensely liked overrated bands immediately. Besides, that’s subjective... but yeah funny nonetheless :)

Aphex Twin is an interesting example because it’s kind of obscure compared to most mainstream, but they (he?) is popular with in that genre, and credited as being one of the better artists .

I knew a guy in college (former friend, but for unrelated reasons) who was OBSESSED with this little punk band from PA. Anytime my friends and I would talk music, he would tell us how good and underrated these guys were and better than anything we were listening to, etc. H e would constantly blow us off to go to their concerts if they were anywhere remotely within driving distance (say 3 hours or less). He eventually convinced my friends and I to go to a show and it was... underwhelming. They weren’t bad, per se, but I couldn’t hear anything differrent than any other punk band I was listening to at the time .
